Young Immigration Activists of Atlanta

Our Story
After Donald Trump was elected president in November 2016, we became concerned about the misguided anger in our country towards immigrants. Through El Refugio, we began to organize groups of students to visit the Stewart Detention Center (A privately owned immigration detention center), in Lumpkin GA to visit men who wanted visitors and to teach others about immigration. This project had support, so we started the Paideia school Immigration Activism Club. We visit the detention center multiple times a year, do service work, host donation drives with various organizations, engage in political advocacy through letter writing and calling events, and work to educate others. In 2019, we had our first Young Immigration Activists of Atlanta Conference and we plan to hold this conference annually to establish a strong network of youth activists.

Our Goals

We are a group of young people who will not buy into the narrative that immigrants are the enemy. We strive to make the immigration system more humane through political advocacy, helping individuals, and education.
